Coaches Corner

2/3/10

Eagles,

We’re starting to stick! The coaches have noticed that a few guys’ throwing and catching skills have improved remarkably since the first Monday in October. If we can get everybody on the wall, daily, our progression, toward our goal of being the best team we can be, will nothing less than remarkable. We are as strong as our weakest link; if we can all throw and catch, we will enjoy an immediate advantage over most teams we will face.

Let’s stick together, and let’s stick when we’re apart! Remember, it is what you do to improve yourself when you are not at practice or in a game that will make us a better team.  And speaking of “a better team”, our team consists of players, coaches, and parents.  I am offering encouragement to those parents who haven’t begun to read The Spirit in the Stick to take ten minutes in the next 24 hours to begin reading the book. We have plenty of copies if anyone needs one. We will be a better team when each of us, players, parents, and coaches, have completed reading the book.

On a different note, Lacrosse, like Football, is a collision sport which sometimes involves serious injury and, more often causes bumps and bruises, scrapes and gashes.  Add to that sticks, and (very hard) solid rubber balls, and I am sure you all understand why it is so very important for each player be wearing a cup and a mouthpiece at all times.  Any kind of “owiee”, whether it needs to be seen professionally or not, should be addressed with RICE, an acronym which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. In any case, especially when there is even slight swelling involved, DO NOT APPLY HEAT.  I had to re-learn that the hard way this week.  Don’t make my mistake!

It’s a great day to be an Eagle!

Hi Gang,

It’s a GREAT DAY to be an Eagle! It’s hard to express how exciting it was for me to meet with all the folks, players and parents and coaches, who came out on Monday.  I’ve been around this game for a while, but in truth, this is only my second year coaching fall lacrosse.  The enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and the spirit of cooperation displayed by the players, AND the he parents AND the coaches helped to confirm that this is exactly where I should be at this time.  That was reaffirmed in Wednesday’s practice when we had at least four guys who hadn’t been the on Monday...  We (the coaching staff) have decided to add Thursday (same Bat-time, 4:30 – 6:30) to our October practice schedule. Thursday is better for our guys who are running Cross-Country, and Wednesday is a little better for our Football guys. It’d be great if everyone could make it to at least two of the three practices and in November we’ll bump it up in preparation for the tournament.

 Some things to remember:

*         It’s what you do AWAY from the team that determine how good we, as a team will be.

*         30-30-30 right before bed.

*         Be on the wall daily.

*         Take care of the machine:

§  Eat responsibly,

§  Stay away from carbonated beverages

§  Get proper sleep

§  Get in some serious running on non-practice days. (We’ve got a long way to go in that department)

*         (This one’s mostly for parents) If your son is injured, please take him to a sports medicine physician and not your pediatrician or family practitioner. That is my urgent recommendation, based on my experience as a coach, as a parent, and as an athlete.  Sports medicine specialists will be more familiar with the kinds of injuries your son is most likely to experience and, in general, I trust their ability to diagnose and prescribe proper rehabilitative care/treatment.

Till next time,

Eagles Soar!
